Google Earth Hits the App Store

The other day Google launched a native Google Earth app for the iPhone and iPod touch, allowing you to view the globe wherever you are. Available in a wide variety of languages, Google Earth lets you browse geo-located photos from around the globe, view geo-located wikipedia articles, fly around the globe to your current location and search for places around the globe using Google local search.

Flying into my current location was fun. I found a number of pictures and articles in the Calgary area around me, and flying around the globe was just as fun as using the desktop application. However, I found using the app extremely slow on my 3G connection, almost unbearable at times.

Check it out in the App Store.

Quick Review: Toxic Balls on my iPhone!

I recently downloaded a fun (and FREE!) little game called Toxic Balls on my iPhone. Despite the fact that I suck at it, I have a lot of fun playing it. You collect the toxic balls in a number of tubes/containers by swiping your finger to rotate the tubes while the balls fall down.

I recently purchased Trails and took it for a test while walking the dog. Minus a few annoyances, I found it to be a great little application for tracking yourself.

Hidden Features in iPhone 2.1 Firmware?

MacRumors is reporting that there may be hidden features inside of the new iPhone 2.1 Firmware Update – features that have been taken out of developer seeds in order to keep them secret. If this is true, we could all be getting a big surprise on September 9, which is the anticipated release date of the software update.

What do you think it could be? Cut and Paste? A new Apple GPS app? Post your thoughts in the comments.

Update: It’s true that the firmware was released today, however it only contains bug fixes. No hidden features.

Get Your Daily News on your iPhone with Newsstand

If you’re like me you’ve got a large list of RSS feeds that you read daily. And if you’ve tried other RSS readers for the iPhone you’ll know that most of the apps available don’t do the job. A few days ago I downloaded Newsstand by omz:software and it’s already found a permanent home on my iPod dock.
